Municipal Roads
The city is the authority responsible for issuing permits for filming in municipal roads. It is up to the city to forward requests for opinions to the various appropriate agencies.
A written request must be forwarded to the City Hall of the city, or Film Commission (if there is one) or to the Agency for the use of Public areas.
The City Hall must contact other Agencies or offices from which it must obtain favorable opinions.
If a production requires the assistance of the Highway Patrol at the filming location, or escort services, the City Hall again acts as intermediary and determines the additional cost involved.
The issuing of authorizations is subject to the advance payment of taxes and changes required by law, which will be determined case by case.
National Highways
For filming on national highways (within or outside town or city limits), please contact ANAS, the Italian Road for public routes.

Motorways
The Autostrada is the Italian national system of motorways. The total length of the system is about 6,400 km; the Italian motorways system is almost entirely managed and maintained by privatized companies.
If you want to film in a specific sector of a motorway you need to determine which one is the company managing that motorway you want to use, then contact the proper company in order to find out if the shoot is feasible in that intended section and on the intended date, then submit your application to both the police department and the motorway company.
The Operational Assistance Department will evaluate the request and its feasibility in conjunction with the Head of the Traffic Department, for the section concerned, and the Police, and after determining the commitment of the personnel and equipment needed for filming it is possible to assess the cost.
In North and Central Italy the biggest portion of the network is in concession to the Autostrade per l’Italia SpA which operates almost 2,900 km. Other operators include ASTM in the north-west, Serenissima and Autovie Venete in the north-east, SALT and Autocisa in the centre.
