Italy’s climate is generally temperate. Only rarely does the temperature rise above 40° C (104° F) during the summer or drop below 10° C (50° F) in winter. Seasons are fairly determinate: winter is long and cold especially in the northern regions; spring can be rainy with sunny days; summer is hot and dry with occasional rain storms while autumn is usually mild with occasional rain. The northern regions experience chilly winters, hot summers and regular, even, rain distribution, while conditions become milder as you head south. Italy can be divided into 3 distinct geographical regions: the North, the Center and the South (included Sicily and Sardinia):
The North:
The region included between the southern Alps and the Tuscan/Emilian Apennines is least affected by the sea. Winter is very chilly and often snowy, while summer is hot, and often in July and August, prone to high levels of humidity.
The Centre:
The central region of Italy, roughly between Tuscany, Emilia Romagna and Southern Lazio, has a mountainous interior where the Appenines rise to over 1,800 m / 6,000 feet. As such there are noticeable differences in conditions between the coastal areas, which have a typical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot and generally dry summers, and the higher areas which are colder, wetter, and often snowy in winter.
The South:
The Southern region of Italy, which includes Sicily and Sardinia, has a dry and generally warm climate with little rainfall, very often with periods of drought. Winter is never too harsh, autumn and spring have very changeable weather, and summer has settled, sunny weather. The extreme south of the mainland (plus Sicily and Sardinia) posses the highest number of hours of sunshine and least amount of rain.
